Editing Digital Photo Resolution Outputs
Before printing an image, you can use a digital photo editor control to specify an output resolution. This determines the number of pixels per inch (ppi). This value, which many people refer to as simply resolution, has a major effect on the quality of your printed digital photos. The more pixels per inch, the better quality your picture. A digital photo with an output resolution of 300 ppi looks crisp and terrific. When the output resolution of an image is reduced to 150 ppi, the picture loses sharpness and detail. Reducing the output resolution to 75 ppi results in significant image degradation.

Output resolution is measured in terms of pixels per linear inch, not square inch. So a resolution of 75 ppi means that you have 75 pixels horizontally and 75 pixels vertically, or 5625 pixels for each square inch of image. Why do 75-ppi images look so much worse than higher-resolution images? Because at 75 ppi, the pixels are bigger. If you divide an inch into 75 squares, the squares are significantly larger than if you divide the inch into 300 squares or 600 squares. The larger the pixel, the easier it is for your eye to figure out that it's really just looking at a bunch of squares. Areas that contain diagonal and curved lines, such as the edges of a coin or handwritten lettering, take on a stair-stepped appearance.
